Diwali Traditions and Dates

Diwali is the Indian "festival of lights" - celebrating the triumph of good over evil.  On the 1st November 2024 Diwali will be celebrated.

In the leading up to Diwali, celebrants may prepare by cleaning and decorating temples, as well as their homes.  Places are brightly light up with candles and lamps, and making an offering of flowers or fruit are made to an image of a god (puja).  People also often wash themselves with water & fragrant oils, and wear adornments new fine clothes.

Families get together and and have a feasts in which sweets and gifts are shared.  They will the set of firworks in the evening.

The rangoli represents the happiness, positivity and livliness of a household, and is intended to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good luck.  It is beleived that a Hindu household without a clean entrance and rangoli is an abode of daridra (bad luck).  The purpose of rangoli is beyond decorations.  A Diwali rangoli is a design made from coloured powders, usually in the form of lines and figures, drawn on the ground or floor during Diwali celebrations.  It is typically made with rice flour, chalk powder and other natural powders such as turmeric for yellow color.
